About Just Legends

Just Legends

We are championing the idea of legends, in all walks of life, to celebrate the positive contribution retirees and people in later life make to society.

In 2013, our Just Legends campaign began with a first for Just Retirement - hosting our inaugural charity rugby match at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday 22 February.

It was an opportunity to see living legends take to the pitch in a unique match: British & Irish Legends vs French Legends.

The British & Irish Legend’s team was captained by Martin Corry, now retired after a career which brought him 64 caps for England, and seven for British & Irish Lions.

The French team was captained by Serge Betsen, who retired in 2008 after winning 63 caps for France during a nine-year international career.

The air temperature may have been just below freezing, but at least the welcome was warm for the 58 British & Irish and French rugby legends as they took to the pitch. An amazing pedigree of rugby stars turned out on the night to support their teams’ nominated charities;  Wooden Spoon, The Serge Betsen Academy and Provale.

An estimated 7,000 people, including around 1,000 Just Retirement employees and guests, braved a bitterly-cold wind and light snow to see some legendary rugby players in action. There were also a couple of special guests, Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Junior who did the kick off (in a blue jersey) and Arsenal's Robert Pires, who converted two tries for the French Legends.

We also filled 8 mascot and 8 ball boy spaces with staff’s children and had a total of 81 kids under 9s, under 10s and under 11s playing tag rugby at half time; all from local schools and Rugby clubs to Reigate.

In the end it was the British & Irish Legends team that came out on top, defeating the French 64 -24. Collin Charvis was declared as Man Of The Match.

We’d like to thank everyone who made to make the British & Irish v French Legends Match a great success – the supporters, the players and all parties involved in making it a wonderful event.
