We are championing the idea of legends, in all walks of life, to celebrate the positive contribution retirees and people in later life make to society.
In 2013, our Just Legends campaign continued with our sponsorship of a second charity rugby match at the Twickenham Stoop on Thursday 31 October.
It was an opportunity to re-live the 2003 World Cup 10 years on, with a unique match: English Legends vs Australian Legends. Many of the World Cup winning team participated in the match with Australia also fielding a strong team of ex-international players.
The English Legend’s team was co-captained by Martin Corry and Jason Leonard, achieving 182 caps for England between them. The Australian team was co-captained by Chris Whitaker and Richard Harry, who held 38 caps for Australia between them during their international career.
An amazing pedigree of rugby stars turned out on the night to support their teams’ nominated charities; the Injured Players Foundation (IPF), RESTART, who help rugby players through difficult times, and Black Dog, a world leader in helping those with mood disorders. The match itself was part of a weekend of events celebrating 10 years since England won the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
After a highly energetic and competitive clash, all the players had proven that a few extra inches on the waist since 2003 hadn't done much to slow them down. This was especially the case for hooker Steve Thompson in the second half, scoring an incredible 80 metre try in front of an ecstatic crowd. At the final whistle England stayed true to the legacy of 10 years ago, battling to a 17-12 victory.
