Older people are viewed in a more positive light than younger individuals, new research has revealed.
Data from the Office for National Statistics' Opinions Survey, published by the Department for Work and Pensions, found those over the age of 70 are considered to have higher moral standards than people in their 20s.
Furthermore, they are thought to be more competent and friendlier.
The majority of respondents considered 'old age' to begin at 59, although this varied considerably depending on the age of the individual questioned.
Although those in their 40s were given the highest status in society, people aged 70 or over were thought to have a higher status than those in their 20s.
Last month, the AA urged individuals to get involved in their local community to help look after those in retirement, as 19 per cent of over 65s live alone and three per cent do not have any relatives they could turn to in the event of an emergency.
