How do I notify you of a death?

At such a difficult time we try to ensure the process of informing us is as easy as possible. If you are responsible for managing the affairs of someone who has passed away we will guide you through the process step by step to ensure everything is managed correctly with regard to the Just Retirement lifetime mortgage.

It is really important for you to notify us as soon as possible. We can ensure that our records are updated and our correspondence is addressed correctly so any additional distress is avoided.

If the lifetime mortgage is held in one person's name
If the lifetime mortgage is held in the name of one person only, and that person passes away we will need to be contacted in writing and sent the original Death Certificate when it becomes available.

You will need to send us:

* the policyholder’s full name, address, postcode and date of birth
* the original Death Certificate
* contact details for all those dealing with the policyholder’s estate.

If the lifetime mortgage is held in joint names
If the lifetime mortgage is held in joint names, you will need to notify us on the death of a joint policyholder and send us the original Death Certificate when it becomes available.

When the surviving policyholder of a joint lifetime mortgage dies, we will then need to be sent:

  • the policyholder’s full name, address, postcode and date of birth
  • the original Death Certificate
  • contact details for all those dealing with the policyholder’s estate.

Dealing with the estate
If you are dealing with the estate of a person who was the sole or sole surviving owner of our lifetime mortgage, you will need to request a redemption statement.

The redemption statement will outline the details of the loan and the accumulated interest that needs to be repaid. The loan can be repaid either through the proceeds from the sale of the house, or through money from alternative sources.

The loan will continue to accumulate interest until it is repaid in full. If the loan is not repaid within 12 months of the death of the last policyholder, Just Retirement reserves the right to take control of the sale of the property.
