Mrs H's story

Retired lecturer Betty Hunter, 63, from Eastbourne, pictured with husband David, 63, daughter Charlotte, 34 and granddaughter Ella, four, managed to boost her pension by 10 per cent by shopping around for an annuity.

Her £35,000 pension pot was converted into an annuity when she turned 60. However, instead of just accepting the annuity offered by her existing provider, Aviva, she explored various different options. She qualified for an enhanced annuity because of her high blood pressure and a problem with her thyroid.

She now gets £110 a month through Just Retirement — compared with £100 from Aviva.
