Brits thinking of taking out equity release have been urged to talk about the matter with their family.
Andrea Rozario, director-general of independent trade body Safe Home Income Plans, said it is "very important" for individuals to speak to their loved ones about the issue.
In many cases, family members will help retirees in their search for suitable products, she explained, adding that her organisation urges financial advisers to encourage this kind of communication among their clients.
Although there can be instances when people do not wish to speak about the matter with others, Ms Rozario said this is "probably unusual and the vast majority of customers do and are happy to discuss it with their family".
Her views echo those of chief executive at independent website unbiased.co.uk Karen Barrett.
She also spoke of the importance of involving loved ones in the equity release process, stating children in particular usually like to be kept in the loop.
