Many people 'lack confidence in pensions'

Regularly contributing to a pension pot throughout their working life could be one of the best ways for people to prepare for their retirement.

However, new research has revealed many individuals lack confidence in this form of saving.

The Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) last week ran a series of daily polls to discover consumers' attitude towards personal finance.

Conducted by YouGov in association with National Savings & Investments (NS&I), the latest survey has revealed a significant number of respondents are wary of building up funds using this method.

While 36 per cent of men think pensions are the best option, just 23 per cent of women gave the same answer.

John Prout, retail customer director at NS&I, said saving is the best way for people to ensure they have sufficient funds during retirement and more must be done to communicate this message to the UK's working population.

"It is disappointing that many people remain unconvinced of the long-term benefit of regularly putting money aside into pensions for their retirement," he added.

Chief executive officer of the IFP Nick Cann agreed, stating the government should encourage individuals to save by making the idea of retirement planning "more relevant and interesting for today's society".

He noted some people find it difficult to commit to making long-term savings when they know they will not be able to access the capital they have built up until they come to the end of their working life.

However, Mr Cann believes now is the time to introduce greater flexibility as an incentive to make consumers save so they "avoid financial disaster" in the future.

It could be that specific industries need to be targeted by campaigns to encourage the use of pensions, as a recent study by Zurich found a significant difference in saving practices across various sectors. For instance, while 73 per cent of employees in a manufacturing job signed up to their firm's pension scheme, 34 per cent of those working in retail did the same.
